The challenge: Swedish confectionery manufacturer, Bubs godis (Bubs candy) were seeking to minimise the waste of raw ingredients and improve product consistency when adding flavors and colourants. The company produces around 15,000 kg of starch-based, AZO-colourant-free gel candy every day at its highly automated plant. However, each product demands different levels of accuracy and flow rate, factors that were causing costly ingredient wastage.

The solution: 13 OEM pumps by Watson-Marlow Alitea (520VBM/REH models) were installed. These brushless-drive peristaltic pumps are integral to the production process. Controlled by an advanced process control system, which communicates over a PROFIBUS network, each of the 13 corrosion-resistant pumpheads are used to inject flavorings and colourants – all of which operate at different flow rates and require high levels of accurate dosing.

The outcome: The OEM pumpheads are providing ongoing benefits of confectionery quality and consistency throughout the production batch. The consistent flow rates have greatly reduced the wastage amount of colourants and flavorings used.  . Up to 45 minutes production time and 200kg of product has been saved as a result.
