Mineral and lime addition are the principal methods for in-plant removal of phosphorous from wastewater. Alum, a hydrated aluminum sulfate, can be used to precipitate phosphorous and is typically added in either the primary and/or secondary stages of water treatment.

The problem with Alum is that it is a corrosive fluid and is prone to attack metallic parts and components. Typical pumps for Alum service are PC, plunger or diaphragm pumps, however the pitfall comes when the maintenance bill arrives, not to mention the timely rebuilds of these pumps.

One of the advantages of peristaltic pumps is that the only wetted part is the inside bore of the tube, so problems of erosion and corrosion of the pump such as failed seals or ball checks are completely eliminated. You’ll only need to change out the tube, saving considerably on time and money.
