A water treatment plant in Santa Fe, NM constantly ran into problems when pumping lime slurry with their submersible pump. Lime slurry typically has a high solids content and is very abrasive. As a result, lime slurry quickly destroys the wearing parts such as rotors, stators and seals in centrifugal and other positive displacement pumps. The failing seals in their submersible pumps became a serious maintenance issue. Each time a seal failed, the lime slurry would flood the floor of the plant’s silo building. This flooding was a real mess to clean up and created a health issue.
Upon some research, plant operators contacted Watson-Marlow in hopes of finding a solution to their costly maintenance problems. Based on their application details, a quote was provided for a Watson-Marlow Bredel SPX25 hose pump. With the unique design of peristaltic pumps, the problematic like slurry is only in contact with the pump hose – there are no valves, seals or glands, eliminating any abrasive wearing on metallic parts. The only required maintenance is an occasional hose change, significantly reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
The Bredel SPX25 was used to replace two dry pit submersible pumps. The plant is pleased that the SPX25 eliminated the costly maintenance repairs and frequent flooding.
