What is International Women in Engineering Day?

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is an annual celebration of women within the engineering industry. The aim is to raise awareness of exciting careers and opportunities within the industry. Please see the INWED website for more information, http://www.inwed.org.uk/

Why are we celebrating International Women in Engineering Day?

This will be the fourth year running that we, as a Company, have celebrated International Women in Engineering Day. We choose to celebrate this day because we recognise that diversity, not only of gender but of age, culture, experience and expertise builds a stronger workforce. Here is a link to our YouTube channel where you can find stories and interviews from women around our business on their careers and love for engineering.

How are we celebrating International Women in Engineering Day?

This year, in spite of COVID-19, we can still passionately support and celebrate International Women in Engineering from the safety of our homes. We have put together some at-home activities for budding engineers that you can do to better understand what we do across the Spirax-Sarco Engineering plc.

What did we do last year for International Women in Engineering Day?

We hosted a networking event, had four inspirational speakers and a lively panel discussion with questions and answers. The guest speakers were Lucy Edge, from Satellite Applications Catapult; Melissa Thorpe, from Spaceport Cornwall; Jane Kingston, who is one of our Non-Executive Directors; and Sade Mokuolu, our WMFTS Product Compliance Manager. Each of the speakers briefly spoke about their career, their current focus and then took questions from the room regarding how we can generate more interest in careers in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – particularly for women, who currently fill just 12% of such jobs. Below find a clip of some of the highlights from the day.
