Low flow metering with high flow cleaning capabilities

A major food manufacturer in Golden Valley, MN was looking to install a new metering line to meter sweetener and vitamins into some of their cereal products.

Sweetener crystalsThey originally considered using precision gear metering pumps but turned to peristaltic technology as it offered a number of advantages. The wide turndown of the Watson-Marlow peristaltic pumps allowed for the low flow metering application as well as a much higher flow cleaning cycle after each batch (reaching critical cleaning fluid velocity). If the CIP operations were down or discontinued it would still be possible to easily clean the pump with a simple tube change or autoclaving.

They were also concerned that the gear pumps could rust when in contact with the cleaning fluids, while the NEMA 4X rating of the Watson-Marlow 520UN fit their washdown requirements. Additionally, as the company’s snacks change in the future, the 520 pumps offer a wide selection of pumpheads that allow for easy retrofitting into new applications.

The plant purchased four Watson-Marlow 520UN/R2 units, two each to meter the sweetener and vitamins, and have been very pleased with their ease of use and minimal maintenance.
