Cost saving in sanitary ingredient transfer

Ready mealA well-known manufacturer of TV dinners, located in Wilkes-Barre, PA, had some very specific requirements in addition to their need to replace their sanitary air operated diaphragm pumps used to transfer sauces and other ingredients from holding tanks in the filling line. These pumps not only took to long to transfer the ingredients, but they also required complete disassembly for cleaning, which again added to the production time.

The Watson-Marlow 840 tube pump was put to work pumping up to 20% soft solids with viscosities up to 5,000 cps of meat, noodles, pasta, cheese sauce and mashed potatoes. One of the company’s requirements, however, is to maintain a paint-free environment in the processing area, mandating a special 840. Watson-Marlow engineers were able to offer the 840 with an anodized aluminum pump housing, stainless steal wash down Baldor % hp motor and a nickel-plated gearbox to meet the requirement. They also wanted to be able to maintain the pump without the use of tools so a “T” handle was welded to the housing bolts allowing access to the pump.

Although CIP capability was not a requirement, the company was pleased that this feature was incorporated in the 800 series pumps. The expected hose life in this application is about two months, which saves considerable money in downtime and maintenance costs over the air operated diaphragm pumps previously used.
