Peristaltic pump doses precise amount of sugar into beer

The challenge

Specialist brewery, Brasserie de Blaugies, which produces around 5600 litres of beer per month, required a method of pumping exact quantities of sugar into premium beer. The brewer had secured a significant ongoing order to fill 20 and 30 litre plastic fermentation vessels with one of its beers. Dosing the precise amount of liquid sugar is critical to achieve the required levels of alcohol and flavour. Too much or too little sugar can be disastrous when brewing beer.

The solution

A 520 Series close-coupled peristaltic pump was installed to provide accurate, contamination-free dosing. This model features MemoDose for precise, single shot dispensing capability. The pump is also rated for 24/7 duties if required. Brasserie de Blaugies uses the 520 Series model in combination with Marprene tubing, Watson-Marlow's exclusive thermoplastic elastomer that offers both long life and wide chemical compatibility. 

The outcome

The 520 Series pump doses accurate and contamination-free quantities of liquid sugar into the vessels after the other beer ingredients have been pumped in at a temperature of 2°C. Following a period of fermentation the beer is decanted into smaller bottles ready for sale. A second bottling line is now planned which will also feature peristaltic pump technology.
