Pumps for creamery applications

Kerry foods applicationCreameries regularly use positive displacement pumps from Watson-Marlow Pumps Group to reduce the shear on handling and transfer services for products such as cream, yoghurt and butter. A gentle, low shear action, along with superior pumping and particulate handling ability, allows users to perform common creamery tasks such as feeding ingredients into the process stream, chemical metering and effluent treatment.

Not only do these pumps deliver reliability and repeatable accuracy to within 0.5%, but they offer the hygienic performance and CIP/SIP capability (along with corrosion and abrasion resistance) demanded by the dairy industry.

By way of example, a yoghurt plant in Reed City, Michigan was until recently using ceramic piston pumps to dispense swirled flavouring into its products. However, leaks developed when the yoghurt’s sugar content scored the ceramic. The plant was spending approximately $8,000 per quarter on replacement pump parts. The solution arrived via a Watson-Marlow 520DiN peristaltic pump, which was not only leak-free but also met the strict NEMA 4X wash-down rating.

MasoSine sinusoidal pumps also have a strong reputation when it comes to creamery applications. The sine wave shaped rotor creates four moving chambers which gently convey the duty fluid from the inlet port to the higher pressure discharge port, while the scraper gate prevents any fluid passing back from the discharge side to the lower-pressure suction side of the pump. These pumps avoid problems such as introducing unwanted aeration or spoiling pieces of fruit in the case of yoghurt manufacture.

Thanks to the large pumping chambers, product integrity can be preserved and maintained even for fragile yoghurt ingredients such as fruit, chocolate chips or other confectionary pieces. What’s more, despite generous flow and pressure capabilities, MasoSine pumps are both energy efficient and quiet in operation.

Economical in-line maintenance is another benefit: with a single shaft and rotor, there is no need for the complex timing gears and multiple seals associated with conventional rotary lobe pumps.

Finally, MasoSine SPS models now come with new stainless steel power frames that are available with 3A certification (which includes CIP).
